The Frenchman has found himself under increasing amounts of pressure in recent days after a stuttering run of form for his side.
Arsenal have won only one of their last seven games in all competitions and were dumped out of the FA Cup by Watford on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners also look to be heading out of the Champions League as they head into Wednesday’s clash with Barcelona trailing 2-0.
Arsenal are now 11 points behind leaders Leicester in the Premier League table.
Some Arsenal fans unfurled a banner urging Wenger to call time on his Gunners career during the win over Hull last week.
However, former Arsenal captain Vieira says that Wenger deserves much more respect.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Vieira said: “Arsenal are going through a difficult period, but I was surprised and a bit disappointed (by the banner).
“Fans can be frustrated, but they forget at times what Arsene has brought to the club.
“He deserves a bit more respect. Fans can boo and show their anger, but the way they did it with that banner showed a lack of respect. This is the way it is, this is football, but it shouldn’t be like that.”
Arsenal take on Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.
