Speaking to BT Sport on Sunday, former Chelsea midfielder Wilkins explained why the Blues could struggle to attract top names in the summer.
“Being out of the CL next year, you can’t bring in the players you want,” Wilkins said.
“We can all talk about next year but they won’t get the pick of the pile.
“They have to go for lesser players or else Roman Abramovich will have to pay a lot of money so they’ll leave their current clubs and not play Champions League next season.”
Chelsea host West Ham United in their next Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
