The Spain international produced another outstanding performance for Louis van Gaal’s side as the United goalkeeper kept the Red Devils alive in the Europe League on Thursday night.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge broke the deadlock in the first leg of their last-16 clash from the penalty spot before Roberto Firmino extended the home side’s lead in the second half.
However, De Gea made a string of world-class saves to deny Brazil international Philippe Coutinho and former Southampton skipper Adam Lallana and keep the score-line at 2-0.
Speaking to ITV Sport following Liverpool’s emphatic victory, former Reds striker Fowler felt that De Gea would almost certainly leave to join Real Madrid in the summer transfer window given United’s poor performances over the course of the season.
“I’d be amazed if he stays,” Fowler said.
“I think Manchester United have big problems. They need 11 new players. I say 11 because I think De Gea is gone.
“If Real Madrid come in, he is gone. I can’t see him going anywhere else.”
The Red Devils host Liverpool in the second leg of their Europa League last-16 clash at Old Trafford next week.
