Toby Alderweireld has been forced to leave the Belgium squad ahead of schedule due to illness, the country’s Twitter account has revealed.

The Tottenham Hotspur centre-half was part of Marc Wilmots’s squad for their upcoming friendly against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Lisbon on Tuesday night.

However, the 26-year-old hasn’t travelled to Portugal due to an ongoing illness which could threaten his participation in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Anfield.

The Belgium national team’s Twitter account confirmed that Alderweireld has been ruled out of the prestigious friendly due to sickness.

Alderweireld has been a mainstay of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team this season after he moved to Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in an £11.5m deal in last summer’s transfer window.

The Belgian defender has scored three goals and has made two assists in 30 Premier League appearances so far this season.
