Mario Gotze needs to decide whether he wants to play first-team football regularly amid reports linking him with a move to Liverpool, according to Bayern Munich’s chief executive.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the World Cup winner since the season came to an end earlier this month, with Jurgen Klopp thought to be keen to bring the £20m target to Anfield.

However, Gotze was speculated to have experienced a change of heart in recent days and was rumoured to be ready to commit to Bayern ahead of the arrival of new manager Carlo Ancelotti this summer.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge provided an update on Gotze’s future on Thursday afternoon, explaining what the forward needs to weigh up ahead of a decision on his future.

“I had talks with him (Mario) and Ancelotti. Mario knows the thoughts of Bayern,” Rummenigge told Kicker magazine. “Everything was clearly and seriously explained to Mario.

“He knows what the club thinks and what the new coach thinks. Mario has to evaluate for himself whether he wants to play constantly.”

Gotze moved to Bayern in a £29m deal from bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
