The Gunners completed their first signing of the summer transfer window on Wednesday afternoon after Granit Xhaka sealed a £33.1m switch to the north London club.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was heavily criticised for failing to sign an outfield player in last summer’s transfer window, snapping up Petr Cech in an £11m deal from Chelsea.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Juventus and Spain striker Alvaro Morata in recent weeks but could face competition from Real Madrid.
However, former Arsenal striker Harton believes the north London outfit should focus their attention on Bayern striker Lewandowski.
“I’d like them to go and get a Lewandowski, that type of player,” Hartson told the Daily Star.
“Another big marquee signing is needed. I know they’ve got in Ozil and Sanchez and paid big money for them but I’d love a Lewandowski.
The Poland international scored 30 times in 32 games in Bayern’s Bundesliga-winning campaign in 2015/16.
Former Borussia Dortmund star Lewandowski has netted 67 goals in 100 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarian side.
