The 22-year-old became Liverpool’s first summer signing on Tuesday evening after he put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Merseyside outfit.
He told me he knew Liverpool was a big club, but he actually realised how big it was when he came here
The 18-time English champions agreed a £4.7m deal with Bundesliga side Mainz for the shot stopper to bolster Klopp’s goalkeeping options.
Karius has been handed the Liverpool number one shirt as the Germany Under-21 looks to compete with Simon Mignolet for a starting spot.
And the new Liverpool signing lifted the lid on a conversation with Klopp that helped to convince the shot stopper to move to Anfield.
“Of course he was a factor – a big factor,” Karius told Liverpool’s website.
“I spoke to him and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players. It was a good talk with him and after that I was convinced this was the right decision. He’s a big coach.”
Karius added: “He told me he knew Liverpool was a big club, but he actually realised how big it was when he came here.
“He didn’t realise until then, and even though he knew it was a big club, still when he came [here] he was surprised at how much bigger it is with all the fans supporting it and the special [feeling] this club has. He was really excited telling me all the stories.”
Karius has kept nine clean sheets in the Bundesliga in 34 top-flight games in the 2015/16 season.
Mignolet signed a new five-year deal with Liverpool in January to secure his long-term future at Merseyside club.
