The Red Devils are thought to be ready to name Mourinho as their next permanent manager after Van Gaal was sacked on Monday night despite winning the FA Cup at the weekend.
Mourinho hasn’t returned to football management since he received his marching orders last December following Chelsea’s dreadful attempt at defending their Premier League crown.
Former Chelsea defender Gallas, who played under Mourinho during the manager’s trophy-laden first spell in west London, is confident that Mourinho would be a success at Old Trafford.
“I think it would be good for Manchester United because it is a long time since they won anything and what I know with Jose is that he can renew that spirit to win everything,” Gallas told Sky Sports News.
“He is a competitive manager and I know that all of the players from Man United will follow him and I’m sure that next season will be very exciting.”
Van Gaal guided United to a fifth place finish behind Manchester City on goal difference in the Premier League this season.
The Red Devils were 2-1 extra-time winners against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
