Ian Wright says he can understand why Leicester City midfielder Jamie Vardy decided to turn down a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners attempted to sign the Premier League winner earlier this summer as Arsenal activated Vardy’s £20m contract release clause following the centre-forward’s exceptional 2015/16 season.

However, the England international rejected the chance to move to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side in favour of remaining at champions Leicester ahead of their first season in the Champions League.

Vardy’s decision to turn down Arsenal means that Wenger is still on the lookout for a potential centre-forward signing as he looks to bolster his attacking options at the Emirates Stadium.

Former Arsenal striker Wright appreciates why Vardy was tempted to move to the Gunners in the summer transfer window.

”Jamie Vardy believes staying at Leicester right now is better for him,” Wright told The Sun Goals podcast.

“It’s very hard. We’re talking about where Arsenal are right now. When I went to Arsenal, they’d just won the league twice. They were flying. Arsenal aren’t in that same place now. All you get with Arsenal is massive pressure.”

Vardy scored 24 times in 36 games in Leicester’s Premier League title-winning campaign.

France striker Olivier Giroud finished as Arsenal’s top goal-scorer in the Premier League last term after a return of 16 goals.
