The Red Devils eased to a 2-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Friday night courtesy of goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic either side of half-time.
United have recorded back-to-back Premier League wins to start their first campaign under new manager Jose Mourinho, who replaced the much maligned Louis van Gaal in May.
The 20-time English champions have scored five goals and have conceded one goal in their opening two top-flight fixtures ahead of next weekend’s trip to promoted side Hull City.
Asked if United would win the Premier League title this season, former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp told Sky Sports:
“They will go close.”
Redknapp added: “They will be contending. I fancy Man City. I think Man Utd will give them a good run for their money.”
United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson guided the Red Devils to their final top-flight crown.
Mourinho’s side won their first silverware of the season at Wembley earlier this month after a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Leicester City.
