The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Germany international in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his defensive options but a deal for the 23-year-old has yet to materialise.
The Arsenal manager is currently without World Cup winner Per Mertsacker and Brazilian centre-half Gabriel Paulista while Laurent Koscielny is still regaining match fitness after France’s Euro 2016 campaign.
Wenger started inexperienced centre-half Calum Chambers and Rob Holding against Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s side eased to a 4-3 victory over the north London side in their Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson can’t understand why Arsenal are haggling over Mustafi’s price tag given the funds available to the Gunners manager.
“I am also puzzled why Wenger has not pushed the deal through yet to get the defender he wants, Shkodran Mustafi of Valencia,” Lawreson told BBC Sport.
Arsenal posted increased profits of £25m last year and have cash reserves of £200m so, if you have no centre-backs available, does it really matter if Mustafi is over-priced by £4m or £5m?
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League title and 10 points behind Leicester City last term.
The Gunners will make the trip to the Premier League champions at King Power Stadium on Saturday evening.
