Wayne Rooney is eager to get back on the pitch ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Southampton at Old Trafford on Friday night.

The Red Devils made a winning start to their Premier League campaign on the south coast on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.

Juan Mata broke the deadlock for the visitors at the Vitality Stadium before Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted second-half goals to seal three points.

The United captain will be hoping to retain his first-team place for the first game of the season at Old Trafford despite Paul Pogba’s presumed introduction to Jose Mourinho’s first-team.

And Rooney took to Instagram to look forward to the visit of the Saints in the Premier League on Friday night as United aim to record back-to-back victories.

Rooney posted the above photo and wrote the following caption:

“📸 #tbt to last weekend. Can’t wait to be back at Old Trafford tomorrow night for our game against Southampton!”

United finished in fifth place in the Premier League last season under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.
