The France international has been utilised in a wide role in United’s opening two Premier League games to accommodate summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who took over the number nine shirt from the 20-year-old forward.
Martial failed to get on the score sheet in last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in their Premier League opener, while the French forward was denied by Virgil van Dijk in the second half during United’s 2-0 win against Southampton at Old Trafford on Friday night.
Giggs was part of the United coaching set-up responsible for helping Martial adapt to his new surrounding last summer after Louis van Gaal signed the French starlet in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco on the final day of the summer transfer window.
While the former United assistant manager believes Martial’s best position is as a centre-forward, Giggs says a break from a striker role won’t do the former Lyon man any harm.
“He is a centre-forward. He plays the centre-forward position so well,” Giggs told Sky Sports after Friday night’s 2-0 victory over Southampton.
“He can come on and be an impact player. There is a lot of pressure on him because of the season he had last year.”
United are top of the Premier League table after two successive victories.
