Gary Neville has told Wayne Rooney that there is only one way for him to regain his place in the Manchester United team – by stepping his game up.

The Manchester United captain once again found himself on the substitutes’ bench on Monday night for the Red Devils’ trip to Liverpool as he was only a late second half substitute at Anfield.

Rooney has struggled to produce consistent form in recent seasons and has been dropped to the bench for both club and country this term.

It remains to be seen whether Rooney will be able to produce the kind of form required to earn a place back in the Manchester United starting line-up on a regular basis under Jose Mourinho.

But former Red Devils defender Neville has told Rooney that there is only one remedy for his current situation.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Monday’s clash between Liverpool and United, Neville said: “Over the last two or three years, there’s been that issue about Wayne Rooney in terms of when he will be dropped.

“He has to play himself back into the team. It’s as simple as that.”
