Graeme Souness believes that Liverpool’s fans would be delighted with a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

The Reds have been one of the Premier League’s top teams so far this season and head into Monday night’s clash with Manchester United three points ahead of their bitter local rivals.

Jurgen Klopp has been tasked with steering the Reds back into the top four after the disappointment of their eighth-placed finish in the top flight last season.

Liverpool have been in fine form this season and have already secured impressive victories against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester City this term.

And Souness feels that there is a sense of optimism around Anfield as the Reds prepare to do battle with Jose Mourinho’s men on Monday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Souness said: “Liverpool have not won the league now for 20-plus years and they would love to put a marker down. If they do, I think it will say they have a real chance this year.

“I would be happy as a Liverpool supporter with top four. Right now, if you are a Liverpool supporter they are maybe thinking even more than top four.”
