Nicky Butt says he still looks forward to the games between Liverpool and Manchester United.

England’s two most-successful clubs will renew their rivalry on Monday night when Jose Mourinho’s side make the short trip to Anfield on Monday night.

Butt scored 26 times in 287 appearances in all competitions as the midfielder won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups during his 11-year spell at Old Trafford.

The 41-year-old called time on his United career in 2004 when the defensive midfielder moved to Newcastle United from Old Trafford.

Former United midfielder admits there are similarities between both sets of supporters despite their rivalry.

“For me growing up, it was always the first game I looked for,” Butt told United’s website.

“In those days, it wasn’t Man City or Arsenal, it was Liverpool. For me now, even as a former player, I still look for that fixture.

“It’s always a massive game when it comes along and, in my opinion, the Liverpool people are the same kind of people as us in Manchester: people who love their city and their football club and, on the day, the match is the be-all and end-all. It’s a game everyone loves, no matter what side of the fence you sit on.”

Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils are in sixth place in the Premier League table and three points adrift of Monday night’s opponents.
