Robbie Fowler has told Liverpool that their main focus this season must be securing a return to the Champions League.

The Reds are aiming to land another top-four finish this season after the disappointment of ending up eighth and without at trophy in Jurgen Klopp’s first campaign in charge last term.

Liverpool have started the new season strongly and do not have the distraction of European football this season as they bid to secure a return to Europe’s elite club competition.

There have been suggestions that Liverpool could be ready to launch a genuine title challenge under Klopp this season.

But former Liverpool striker Fowler believes that the Merseyside club’s main priority must be to focus on breaking back into the Champions League.

Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mirror before Monday’s game with Manchester United, Fowler said: “Ultimately the Champions League [would represent a successful season].

“I know the fans and everyone outside the club is suddenly talking about a title fight, and as a player as well, you want to win stuff.

“But the bottom line these days is Europe, and so the top four is a success, especially when you consider some very big teams won’t make it this year, and also the fact they finished eighth last year.”
