Jurgen Klopp turned to England international Adam Lallana in the 60th minute as the Liverpool manager looked to break down a resolute United defence at Anfield.
Emre Can, who was making his first Premier League start of the 2016-17 season, drew a good save from David De Gea with a low shot before the Manchester United goalkeeper pushed Philippe Coutinho’s powerful shot wide.
The Brazil international played in Roberto Firmino with a clever flick with eight minutes remaining but Antonio Valencia managed to dispossess the Liverpool forward before he pulled the trigger.
Former United midfielder Giggs felt Spanish midfielder Herrera typified the away side’s disciplined performance at Anfield.
“Ander Herrera typified [the Mourinho plan] really,” Giggs told Sky Sports.
“I played against him when he was playing for Bilbao. He was playing as a number 10. To put in the performance that he did, so disciplined, always in the right place, calming the play down, it was a really good performance from Ander – but also the team defensively.”
Liverpool will host West Bromwich Albion in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
United, meanwhile, will make the trip to Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
