Ryan Giggs says Marouane Fellaini is a Manchester United player that divides opinion but insists the midfielder has a role to play at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho recalled the towering Belgium international to his starting line-up for United’s goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.

Fellaini played his part in Mourinho’s master plan as the Red Devils managed to halt Liverpool’s building momentum with a disciplined performance on Merseyside.

The former Everton man has started six of Mourinho’s eight Premier League games in charge at Old Trafford but dropped to the bench to accommodate Ander Herrera in recent weeks.

Giggs was part of the United backroom team that signed Fellaini in a £27m deal in 2013 following the appointment of David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.

And the former United assistant manager revealed that Fellaini’s problem is that he will never emulate some of the club’s legendary midfielders, such as Roy Keane and Paul Scholes.

“He splits opinion. When you coach him, he does exactly what you tell him. There are some players, you’ve got to tell three, four or five times,” Giggs told Sky Sports on Monday night.

“You tell Fellaini to do one thing, and he’ll do it. The problem is, when you look at the United midfielders down the years, like Robson, Keane or Scholes, he’s not going to compare to those players.

“He’s not someone who is going to beat men or shoot from outside the box. He is what he is. But, on his day and especially in big games, he can be a nuisance.”
