Jurgen Klopp admits it is pretty likely Loris Karius will retain his place in the Liverpool side for their trip to Southampton in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

The German shot stopper started the season as Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper after he moved to the Anfield outfit in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz in the summer transfer window.

Karius suffered a broken hand in pre-season and didn’t take his place in the Liverpool side until late September but the 23-year-old struggled to impress in goal with some erratic performances.

Klopp opted to drop Karius in favour of his number two Simon Mignolet after back-to-back poor displays against Bournemouth and West Ham United.

However, the former Manchester City goalkeeper was recalled to the Liverpool side for their goalless draw with Plymouth in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon.

Asked whether Karius would start against Southampton in the League Cup, Klopp told his pre-match media conference at Melwood on Monday afternoon.

“[I have made] no final decision until now, but it’s pretty likely, I would say, that Loris plays again,” Klopp said.

“It’s fair for his response in training, performances and all that stuff. It’s likely, not sure.”
