The Germany international is facing an uncertain future at the Gunners after talks with the Premier League side stalled in recent weeks despite speculation suggesting that Arsenal have offered the playmaker a staggering £180,000 a week.
Ozil, though, has hinted that he is holding out on signing a new contract with Arsenal until the World Cup winner has a better idea whether Arsene Wenger is set to stay at the north London club beyond the summer.
The manager’s current Gunners deal is set to expire at the end of the 2016-17 season with uncertainty surrounding Wenger’s long-term future at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, former England and Liverpool goalkeeper Kirkland has urged Arsenal to do whatever it takes to keep both Alexis Sanchez and Ozil at the north London club.
“They’ve got to keep him,” Kirkland said.
“They’re talking about all the figures and that but to replace someone of Mesut Ozil’s quality, you’re talking £40m or £50m to go and buy a player.
“He is rumoured to be asking for a lot of money, but if Arsenal want to keep challenging for the Premier League and the major titles, they’ve got to do all they can to keep him and Alexis Sanchez.”
Arsenal are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
