The England striker hit the headlines over the weekend as he scored in the Red Devils’ 4-0 FA Cup win over Reading to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goal-scoring record for Manchester United.
Rooney has come in for plenty of criticism this season for failing to produce consistent displays for both club and country.
However, Liverpool legend McManaman says that the 31-year-old forward does not get the respect he deserves for what he has achieved in his career.
Speaking to BT Sport after Manchester United’s win on Saturday, McManaman said: “He’s still a young man to a certain extent.
“He’s still got a lot of football left in him. The fact that he’s broken these records at such a young age is absolutely phenomenal, especially at a team like Manchester United, with their history and prestige around the world.
“He deserves a huge amount of applause.”
Manchester United now turn their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their crunch home clash against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are currently in sixth place but have won their last six games in the top flight to boost their Premier League hopes.
