The Reds have endured a stuttering start to the new year under Jurgen Klopp and dropped out of the top four at the weekend following their shock 2-0 loss to Hull City on Saturday.
Indeed, Liverpool are yet to win a Premier League game this year and must improve their form if they want to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
As the season approaches its conclusion, attentions will inevitably turn towards the summer transfer window and potential new recruits for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
And Redknapp feels that a top-quality midfielder should be at the top of the shopping list in the summer.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Liverpool look like they have completely run out of steam — and it is because they do everything at 100mph.
“Everything has to get from A to B as quickly as possible. Their priority this summer should be to sign a midfielder in the mould of Xabi Alonso or Jan Molby, who can control the tempo of the game.
“Opponents are beginning to suss out Liverpool and Hull’s second goal on Saturday summed it up. Teams are happy to sit back against them — they know if they can beat the first press they can hurt Liverpool on the break.”
Liverpool are currently fifth in the Premier League table as they gear up for their crunch clash against Tottenham at Anfield next weekend.
