Martin Keown has described Mesut Ozil as an “expensive luxury” for Arsenal in the wake of last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Chelsea.

The north London club failed to click into gear as they were comfortably beaten by their bitter local rivals at Stamford Bridge to suffer a damaging blow to their Premier League title hopes.

Ozil has often been criticised for failing to deliver when his team are struggling.

And Keown has given his take on Arsenal’s situation in the wake of the Gunners’ loss to the Blues.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, former Arsenal defender Keown said: “After the defeat by Chelsea, it was interesting that Wenger said that senior players did not perform.

“That is really unusual for Sanchez but Ozil becomes an expensive luxury when you are out of possession.

“Ozil does not know his role when Arsenal do not have the ball and it is the responsibility of the manager to tell him.”

Ozil will be expecting to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action with a home clash against Hull City this weekend.
