Paul Scholes questioned the St Etienne goalkeeper after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s free-kick broke the deadlock in Manchester United’s 3-0 win against St Etienne at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The Red Devils were hosting the Ligue 1 side in the first leg of their last 32 clash in the Europa League and Ibrahimovic won a first-half free-kick in fortuitous circumstances.

The summer signing assumed control of set-piece duty and the 35-year-old fired a low shot under the wall which was deflected past Stephane Ruffier and into the net in the 15th minute.

Ibrahimovic’s free-kick was his 21st goal of the 2016-17 season in all competitions to help settle Manchester United before the veteran striker completed his hat-trick with two second-half goals.

Speaking to BT Sport, Scholes said:

“He is trying to hit it under the wall. We saw it the other night and Philippe Coutinho was sat the behind the wall trying to stop something like that.

“Fortunately it hasn’t happened. I question the goalkeeper. The ball went so slowly over the line. He just can’t get himself up.”
