Paul Scholes has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United must challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils have made something of a mixed start to life under their new manager following his appointment as the club’s new boss back in May.

Manchester United have struggled to produce consistent performances in the top flight so far this season and currently sit sixth in the table as they look to claw their way back into the top four.

Mourinho has been tasked with guiding the Red Devils back into the Champions League in his first campaign in charge.

Scholes says a top-four finish this season is a minimum requirement and feels that the Red Devils must establish themselves as genuine title challengers next term.

Asked what would be a good season from this point for Manchester United, Scholes told The Daily Mail: “Definitely finish in the top four.

“This time last year I would have said that was still a failure. But from what he’s had to rebuild, a top-four finish would be acceptable.

“Winning two of the three cup competitions would be very good and constitute a really good season.
