Paul Scholes praised Paul Pogba’s performance in a “Michael Carrick role” after the midfielder helped Manchester United to ease to a 3-0 win against Saint-Etienne on Thursday night.

The France international was pitted against his older brother Florentin in the first leg of the last 32 clash in the Europa League at Old Trafford.

And the former Juventus midfielder thrived in a deep-lying role alongside Ander Herrera as the world’s most-expensive player pulled the strings in the European clash.

Pogba was denied what would have been his eighth goal of the season when the Manchester United playmaker hit the woodwork in the second half.

Speaking to BT Sport about Pogba’s performance for Jose Mourinho’s side, Scholes delivered a glowing reviewing of the French midfielder’s contribution.

“He surprised me a little bit playing that deeper role but he was good. He was pulling the strings with some great passes. He had the vision,” Scholes said.

“He was a little bit in the Michael Carrick role. He just sat and controlled play. He was good. He was a big influence and long may that continue.”
