Paul Scholes tips Man United star to leave Old Trafford

Paul Scholes believes that Wayne Rooney's days at Manchester United could be numbered

Paul Scholes has admitted that Wayne Rooney could leave Manchester United in search of regular first-team football.

The England striker’s situation at Old Trafford has been a relentless source of speculation in recent months due to his lack of playing time under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Rooney has been in and out of the first team at Old Trafford and has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the team.

The 31-year-old striker has been limited to just eight Premier League starts for Manchester United so far this season, while making a further nine appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

It remains to be seen whether Rooney could end up staying at Old Trafford beyond the summer transfer window.

And former Manchester United midfielder Scholes feels that the striker could be on his way out of the club if he does not hold down a regular spot between now and the end of the season.

Asked if he can see Rooney staying at Manchester United for another two years, Scholes told The Daily Mail: “If it carries on going the way it is, I can’t. Maybe it will be re-assessed at the end of the season if he’s in and out of the team.

“I don’t see him as a player who will accept that. He will want to be at a team where he’s playing every week.”

He continued: It’s a strange one. No one will be more frustrated than Wayne at not playing. Being a sub will be driving him up the wall. When he gets his chance he has to take it because he has real competition.”
