The Portuguese coach seemed to struggle to implement his ideas during the first few months of the season following his appointment at Old Trafford last summer.
However, the Red Devils have been in much improved form in recent weeks and are now unbeaten in 16 Premier League games in the top flight.
Manchester United are still sixth in the table as they bid to try and climb their way back into the top four this season.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Scholes has been impressed with what he has seen from Mourinho since his appointment as the Red Devils’ new boss back in May.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mail, Scholes said: “He has the stature to be United manager, the reputation and presence. I just wish it had happened three years ago!
“There was concern among my mates who are United fans. Can we cope with his histrionics at other clubs? He also had a reputation for being there two or three years then going.
“There were worrying signs. He was sent off twice and had a bit of a go at Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw in public.
“But since then it’s been totally different. He’s been very impressive.”
Manchester United finished fifth and won the FA Cup last season before Mourinho was drafted in as Louis van Gaal’s replacement.
