The Scottish Sun had reported on Monday that Chelsea were interested in signing Dembele but Celtic had quoted a price of £30m deal for the France Under-21 centre-forward in the January transfer window.
Dembele scored 20 times in 38 games in all competitions in the 2016-17 season so far, with the striker netting five times in 12 games in the Champions League campaign.
Chelsea didn’t make any January signings, though, as Nathan Ake was the only addition to Antonio Conte’s squad after returning from his short-term loan at Bournemouth last month.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Chelsea’s lack of transfer business, Nicholas said:
“I was surprised by the amount of business they tried to do over the last couple of days – especially given the amount of players they’ve got out on loan. But Antonio Conte clearly doesn’t stand still.
“If Celtic could have got £25m for Moussa Dembele, I think it would have been a brilliant deal – possibly even a bit over the top – but he’s stayed put for now.”
Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Tuesday night to leave the Blues nine points clear of their closest rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the title race.
