Phil Thompson says Adnan Januzaj will never be able to deliver on his potential at Manchester United.

The 22-year-old earned plenty of praise when he first burst onto the scene at Old Trafford but has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the Manchester United team.

Januzaj was deemed to be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford this season by incoming manager Jose Mourinho as he was shipped out on loan to Sunderland.

However, the Belgium international has only scored one goal so far this season for the Black Cats.

And former Liverpool star Thompson feels that Januzaj is unlikely to be able to deliver on the promise he first showed at Manchester United.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday, Thompson said: “I don’t think he’s ever going to get back to those heights.

“He fleets in and out of games and I think that’s why he starts. They’re hoping to get one or two moments of magic where he can create something or score a goal. He does produce it but he doesn’t do it often enough.

“For a team like Sunderland, trying to get out of the relegation zone, I think that’s where he lies. Even if he moves on I don’t think he’s ever going to produce what he did at Manchester United.”
