Antonio Conte has revealed that he opted to throw Cesc Fabregas into the mix for Chelsea against Stoke to help his team chase a winner.

Conte opted to bring the Spaniard on with 20 minutes left to play at the Bet365 Stadium with the score at 1-1 as the west London side searched for a victory.

The move prompted Chelsea to switch to a back four for the closing stages of the game – and it paid dividends as Gary Cahill scored the all-important winner in the 87th minute.

Conte was quizzed about his decision to bring on Fabregas in the second half and the Italian manager lifted his lid on the decision following the victory.

Conte told his post-match news conference: “This is not the first time [to make this kind of change during a game] because it happened against Burnley.

“If you want to take more risk and try to take three points and not only one, you have to try to change but when you change, there is the great possibility to score a goal but also to concede and you must know this.

“Sometimes I try to risk and other times I prefer to keep the result.”
