Jamie Carragher has told Jose Mourinho that it is “nonsense” to brand Chelsea as a defensive team under Antonio Conte this season.

Mourinho aimed a subtle dig at his former club earlier in the campaign when he claimed that the Blues had a “defensive” approach to their game this term under new manager Conte.

The Portuguese coach watched his side lose 1-0 to Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Stamford Bridge on Monday night as Conte triumphed over Mourinho once again following the 4-0 Premier League drubbing earlier in the season.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher has dismissed Mourinho’s recent comments about the Chelsea team this season.

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Carragher said: “It is nonsense to say Chelsea are defensive.

“Only Liverpool have scored more goals so far in the Premier League, but they have played an extra game. There is a huge difference between being a defensive team and being very good defensively. Conte’s Chelsea are the latter.

“Mourinho should know that better than anyone. He had to contend with the same arguments when he arrived at Chelsea in 2004-05, and they won 11 of their 38 games 1-0, conceding just 15 goals en route to the title.

“Conte has not allowed himself to be bullied and it felt like a huge moment on Monday when he stood up to Mourinho on the touchline as Chelsea knocked United out of the FA Cup. In many ways, it could be the moment Conte cemented his place in the affections of Chelsea’s fans.

Chelsea are currently flying high at the top of the Premier League table and are the firm favourites to win the title this season, while Manchester United are sixth as they bid to finish in the top four this term.
