Jurgen Klopp has admitted that a top-four finish for Liverpool would represent an “outstanding” success for the Reds this season.

The Liverpool boss has been tasked with steering the Merseyside outfit back into the top four this season after the Reds ended up eighth in the table and without a trophy last term.

Liverpool are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City at The Etihad on Sunday afternoon as they look to keep their top-four bid on track.

The Reds headed into this weekend’s round of Premier League fixtures in fourth place in the table as Klopp bids to guide Liverpool back into the Champions League for next season.

However, Klopp has told Liverpool fans that a top-four finish in the Premier League this season would be a huge success for the Reds given the intense competition in the English top flight.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Klopp said: “I would say this season going to the Champions League would be an outstanding success because of all the quality around us.

“This season is a good example for how close and how tight it is.

“January and February cost us a lot and that’s true. Because we had injuries we had a few games that cost us energy.

“We lost two or three games too much, we could have won against Hull. We could have won against Swansea. Six points more and we are really on the neck of Chelsea. That’s how it is.

“It doesn’t mean because we lost these two games, everything else is wrong. But it also doesn’t mean it is perfect. We take all the information and really try to get better every day.”
