Phil Jones has warned his Manchester United team-mates that Middlesbrough will be out to prove themselves following the sacking of Aitor Karanka in the build-up to Sunday’s Premier League clash.

The Red Devils head into the game looking to get their Premier League bid back on track after successfully booking their place in the quarter-finals on the Europa League last week.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are gearing up for their first game since Karanka’s sacking last week as they fight for Premier League survival.

And Manchester United defender Jones has warned his team-mates that taking Boro on at the Riverside Stadium will be no easy feat on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to MUTV, Jones said: “Maybe it wasn’t a sparkling performance the other night but it was one that was pleasing and positive and we’re through to the next round.

“Middlesbrough have just sacked the manager as well so it will probably be even tougher than what it would have been. But we’ve got more than enough to cope with that. We have strength in depth in this squad and that’s why we need everyone.

“There is always an added incentive for everyone playing Manchester United as it is but, when you sack the manager it’s even more of a boost for them. Especially for the ones who have not been playing in the squad who can force their way into the team and impress. It will be a tough game but we need to be ready for it.”

Manchester United heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures in sixth place in the Premier League table as they bid to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League under new boss Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils finished fifth and without a trophy last season.
