Paul Merson is backing Tottenham to continue their push towards a top-four finish in the Premier League by beating Southampton at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

The Lilywhites head into the game fresh from having secured their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals against Chelsea next month.

Mauricio Pochettino is bidding to steer Tottenham back into the top four this season after the Lilywhites ended up third in the table last season.

Spurs qualified for the Champions League but were dumped out in the group stage and were also eliminated from the Europa League.

Tottenham are currently Chelsea’s closest challengers in the Premier League table, with the Lilywhites currently second and 10 points behind the leaders.

And despite Harry Kane being out injured, Merson is backing Tottenham to claim all three points at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Writing in his weekly column for Sky Sports, former Arsenal star Merson said: “I think Tottenham will be OK without Harry Kane for one or two games, but over a longer sequence of games, I do not think it will be so good.

“And they need to win this football match in order to cement top four, so if they do not win this game and Kane is also out, I do not see them winning too many other football matches in my opinion.

“So it is a must-win game for them, but I think they will do a job without him for one, two or three games. But not for the next eight or nine games if he is out for that long.

“But I am going to just go for Tottenham, because at the moment they are playing some very good football, so I am going to go 3-1 to Tottenham.”
