Alvaro Morata has suggested that he always wanted to sign for Chelsea ahead of Manchester United this summer after his move to Stamford Bridge was confirmed on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old striker was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United for most of the summer transfer window but the Red Devils ended up signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton last week.

Chelsea agreed a fee, thought to be around £60m, to sign Morata from Real Madrid on Thursday, with the move subject to personal terms and Morata passing a medical with the west London club.

And Morata has claimed that he always wanted to sign for Chelsea this summer as he prepares to try and prove himself in the Premier League next season.

Speaking in an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, Morata said: “I am very happy, God willing, tomorrow I will be at Chelsea, a club that has always wanted me.

“I’m not disappointed about anything, I’ve won four titles here [with Real Madrid], but now I only think of putting on the Chelsea shirt.

“I want to grow up, if I didn’t I wouldn’t have left. I’d like to thank Zidane and wish him luck for the upcoming season.”

He added: “It was clear that the goal was to leave, it’s been a fairly strange summer and until I pass the medical examination, I’m not going to be calm.

“Thanks to all the Madridistas who supported me. I will always wish Madrid the best. The last time I wore this shirt was in Cibeles.”

Morata is poised to become Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer after the Blues wrapped up deals to sign Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The west London side are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after Antonio Conte led the Blues to the Premier League title last term.

Morata scored 15 goals and made four assists in 26 La Liga game for Real Madrid last season but he was limited to just 14 starts in the Spanish top flight.
