The Reds were heavily linked with a move to try and sign the Southampton defender last month but the defender’s proposed switch to Anfield fell through after the Saints reported Liverpool to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach to sign the player.
That prompted Liverpool to drop their interest in the 26-year-old defender and forced them to issue a statement apologising to Southampton.
Liverpool continue to be linked with a swoop for Van Dijk this summer but it remains to be seen whether there is any truth in those rumours.
And Klopp has now responded to the criticism of Liverpool following their dealings in the matter.
Klopp told the Liverpool Echo: “I didn’t even know that I was criticised, that I’m still criticised.
“Was the club criticised? That’s not nice. We said apologies, done. How can we say anything more about this?”
Liverpool are currently preparing for their second full season under Klopp as they look to make a return to the Champions League next term.
The Reds finished fourth in the Premier League table last season and will be hoping to challenge for the title next term.
