Ander Herrera has admitted that it is a shame that Manchester United have not been able to sign Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid this summer.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a bid to bring the 24-year-old striker to Old Trafford throughout the summer and were thought to be closing in on a deal to sign the Spaniard.

However, Manchester United were unable to agree on a fee with Real Madrid and instead switched their attentions towards signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton last week.

There was lots of speculation linking Morata with Manchester United and ever Herrera admits that he was expecting to line up with his compatriot at Old Trafford next season.

And Herrera has spoken out for the first time this summer about the speculation linking Morata with a move to Old Trafford.

Herrera is quoted as saying by Metro: “I even started to think I’d be playing with Morata. He was really close to signing.

“It’s a shame he’s not with us but he’s a top striker and will do well wherever he plays.”

Manchester United completed the signing of Lukaku from Everton last Monday as the Red Devils tied up their second recruit of the summer following the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica.
