Jose Mourinho has hinted that Marcus Rashford will be a key part of his plans for next season and is backing the Manchester United striker to be one of the club’s top scorers.

The teenager scored twice as Manchester United won their first pre-season friendly this summer with a comfortable 5-2 win over LA Galaxy in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Rashford’s playing time in a central striker role was somewhat limited last season as Mourinho preferred to deploy Zlatan Ibrahimovic in that position.

However, the Portuguese coach has suggested that Rashford is going to get more playing time this season and is expecting him to have a top campaign for the Red Devils.

Speaking at his post-match news conference in LA on Saturday night, Mourinho said: “Last season in this period everyone was saying it would be difficult for me to play him but he was one of the top appearance-makers of the team last season which is good for his evolution.

“He played in the Europa League, important matches, and he’s learning a lot.

“He’s a great pro, has a great attitude and last season he maybe was not scoring a lot of goals and missing some chances but it was not a drama because that’s part of the evolution. We know he is going to score more goals than last season.”

Manchester United are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after they won the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign at the club.

The Red Devils will be looking to improve their Premier League performances next season after their disappointing sixth-placed finish last term.
