The Times is reporting that the west London club are ready to try and step up their attempts to land the 26-year-old defender, who has been strongly linked with Liverpool for much of the summer.
The same report claims that Liverpool had been leading the chase for Van Dijk’s signature this summer but the Blues now plan to “exploit” the Reds’ poor relations with Southampton after their failed approach back in June.
The story also says that Chelsea are “optimistic” that a deal to sign Van Dijk could be agreed before the start of the Premier League season next weekend.
Van Dijk is continuing to train alone at Southampton as the speculation about his future beyond the summer continues.
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising to the Saints back in June after Southampton accused the Reds of an alleged illegal approach.
Chelsea have already signed four players this summer, after having tied up deals for Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata ahead of the new campaign.
