Van Dijk’s future has been a constant source of debate this summer after the Southampton defender appeared to be on the brink of signing for the Reds back in June.
Liverpool, however, were abruptly forced to end their interest in the player and issue an apology to Southampton after the Saints accused the Reds of an alleged illegal approach.
It seemed in June that Liverpool would be unlikely to sign Van Dijk this summer but the speculation linking the Netherlands defender with a move to Anfield has not gone away.
Now, former Liverpool star Carragher has claimed that the 26-year-old defender could still make a late move to join the Reds before the close of the transfer window.
Speaking in an interview with 5times.co.uk, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Carragher said: “I reckon the Van Dijk saga will go right down to the wire.
“I don’t think Liverpool have ended all their interest in him at all.
“Nevertheless, if we go into the new season with what we’ve got now, I think there will be a lot of trepidation amongst the Liverpool fans.”
Liverpool have made three signings so far this summer, after having completed deals for Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson.
The Reds are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after they finished fourth last term.
