The Reds made an unconvincing start to the new Premier League campaign after Stefano Okaka’s header broke the deadlock in the eighth minute at Vicarage Road.
Sadio Mane cancelled out Watford’s opener with a clinical finish only for Abdoulaye Doucoure to restore the home side’s slender lead following poor Liverpool defending.
The Merseyside outfit were much improved in the second half and appeared to be coasting towards three points following Roberto Firmino’s penalty and Mohamed Salah’s first goal for his new club.
However, Watford capitalised on Liverpool’s inability to clear the ball from their area and Miguel Britos bundled the ball over the line in the third minute of added time to deny Liverpool three points.
Liverpool have been regularly linked with a move to sign Van Dijk in the summer transfer window but the Reds have failed to get a deal over the line for the Netherlands international.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher warned that even if the Reds complete a deal for Van Dijk, Klopp has a wider issue to resolve with the club’s defence.
“It’s the set up from the manager. They concede the most goals out of anyone in the top six. Nothing has changed,” Carragher told Sky Sports following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw.
“One man is not going to [make a difference], the position of the full-backs in general play leaves the centre-backs exposed.
“Liverpool play so high and wide that they have a centre-back exposed there all the time. One player’s not going to change that.
“Van Dijk better than [Lovren and Matip] and that’s why he’s [valued at] £50 or £60m, but it doesn’t matter how good a centre-back is, they are being exposed.”
The Reds will take on Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff on Tuesday night.
