Manchester United will be one of the main contenders for the Premier League title next season, according to Jaap Staam.

The Red Devils are currently preparing for Jose Mourinho’s second season in charge at Old Trafford after his appointment as the club’s new boss back in May 2016.

Mourinho led the Red Devils to EFL Cup and Europa League glory in his first campaign at the helm, but their form in the Premier League left a lot to be desired, as they ended up sixth in the table.

The Portuguese coach has now been tasked with steering Manchester United to their first Premier League title since their Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.

And Staam feels that the Red Devils will definitely be among the teams competing for the title this season.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Staam said: “A club like United, you always want to win the league. It’s always their aim. It has to be their aim, to win the league.

“Bringing certain players in with a certain quality, it’s always been like that at United as well.

“You’re always looking as a manager, Mourinho as well, how last season went and what quality do we need. You’re going to be looking for that as a club.

“You can see now, with the signings that they’ve done, brought some great players in; quality-wise very good, experience-wise very good as well.

“That makes it interesting as well because if you look at the other teams as well, they’re all bringing good players in because they all want to win the league or do well in the Champions League.”

Manchester United are also gearing up for a return to the Champions League next season after their Europa League triumph under Mourinho last term.

The Red Devils will kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against West Ham United later this month, after playing Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday.
