Jack Wilshere admits he is eager to continue improving and rediscover his top form for Arsenal next season.

The 21-year-old midfielder made 33 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions after missing the whole of the 2011-12 season due to ankle and knee trouble.

Arsène Wenger used Wilshere sparingly in the final games of the season after it emerged that the England international requires a minor operation to remove a pin from his ankle in the coming days.

But reflecting on the season as a whole, Wilshere has been pleased with his progress.

“From a personal point of view it has been good season for me, especially after last year,” Wilshere told Arsenal Player.

“I played no games last year, so to get 33 under my belt this time was great and it puts me in good stead for next season as well.

“Hopefully I can get more games under my belt, improve my form a bit more and get back to the level I know I can get to.

“I had a good run of games after my injury, then I picked up another injury, which set me back a bit. But before that I was pleased with my form and how the team were playing.”

Gareth Bale has admitted Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to secure fourth place was “very disappointing”.

The Wales international produced a moment of magic to score the winner against Sunderland on Sunday but his effort was rendered meaningless as Arsenal were 1-0 winners at Newcastle United.

With the Gunners finishing one point ahead of their north London rivals and securing the final Champions League spot, Spurs are faced with the prospect of another season in the Europa League.

And PFA player of the year, Bale, who has scored 21 Premier League goals this season, couldn’t hide his disappointment at missing out on Europe’s premier club competition.

“It was obviously great to sign off with a great goal in the last minute, but circumstances made it hard to celebrate,” Bale told Tottenham’s website.

“To play the way we have also but to miss out on our objective [Champions League qualification] is very disappointing.”

Bale picked up Tottenham’s player of the year award to complete a unique treble after winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Association’s equivalent earlier in the season.

And the 23-year-old, who has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane this summer, promised that the north London side would regroup over the summer before another assault on the top four next term.

“We fought hard this season, the team and the manager have been great,” Bale added. “We have got the record points for the club in the Premier League.

“That would normally be enough to qualify for the Champions League, but it’s not meant to be again.

“It’s disappointing, but we will pick ourselves up again.

“We will just have to regroup this season and give it another go.”

Arsenal are not interested in signing Steven Jovetic this summer, according to Fiorentina sporting director Daniel Prade.

The Gunners have been linked with a £24.5m bid for the highly-rated 23-year-old Montenegro forward in recent weeks but Prade insists that he has had no contact from the north Londoners.

“The way I see it, this interest [in Jovetic] is non-existent,” Prade told Rai Sport.

“I have not had any contact with them at all. I don’t think Arsène Wenger is interested in the boy.”

Prade’s comments come after the Serie A club’s president Andrea Della Valle stressed that they would not be selling the striker on the cheap.

“Jovetic must understand his future, make the right choice,” said Della Valle. “The important thing is that, if he does leave, we compensate for his sale by bringing in suitable replacements.”

Jovetic has scored 13 goals and made five assists in 31 Serie A appearances for Fiorentina this season.

Arsenal have been warned that they would have to part with more than £85m if they want sign Rémy Cabella from Montpellier this summer.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old France Under-21 midfielder, who faced the Gunners twice in the Champions League last season.

Cabella has scored seven goals and made eight assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances for Montpellier this season and Arsène Wenger is believed to be a keen admirer of the playmaker.

But Montpellier deputy chairman Laurent Nicollin has dismissed the suggestion that Cabella could follow striker Olivier Giroud to north London by insisting that the French club are determined to keep the midfielder.

“He is non-transferable. We try to anticipate and plan things, even in football, but it’s complicated,” Nicollin told RMC.

“The desire of the club is to keep Remy – he was told and knows this. If a club arrives and offers €100m, it will be discussed though.”

Meanwhile, Auxerre forward Yaya Sanogo has described Arsenal as a “great club” at which to further his career after Wenger confirmed the Gunners are close to a deal for the 20-year-old.

Sanogo said: “Arsenal could be a great club for me. I scored nine goals this season with Auxerre and they think I can improve my level in England.

“There are many teams interested in me, but Arsenal is my choice.”

Theo Walcott has told his Arsenal team-mates they must start “believing in their potential” and says the Gunners can challenge for the title next season.

Arsène Wenger’s men secured Champions League qualification on the final day of the season thanks to a nervy 1-0 win at Newcastle.

But the 24-year-old is adamant that the Gunners must be aiming higher than just a top-four finish and believes that some new additions over the summer can help the north Londoners mount a credible title challenge next term.

“I’m sure there’ll be some comings and goings,” Walcott told Sky Sports. “Next season we have to push on and win some silverware, that’s our next big target.

“We’ve got to believe that we are [title contenders]. That’s what we want to challenge for. I don’t want to always be challenging for fourth, I want to be challenging for the title, and next season is definitely a must.

“It’s only going to get better. The players that come in will boost the team but we need to start believing in our potential. We’ve shown we can do it.”

Walcott enjoyed his most prolific season at Arsenal this term, scoring 21 goals in all competitions and notching up 17 assists.

Mousa Dembélé believes Tottenham’s top-four failure came as a result of not performing against the “small” teams.

Spurs were pipped to Champions League qualification by local rivals Arsenal, whose 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday was enough to see them finish a point ahead of André Villas-Boas’ men.

Tottenham beat Manchester City and drew at Chelsea during their run-in but dropped points against the likes of Wigan and Fulham to allow Arsenal to edge their way back in front.

And midfielder Dembélé says that Spurs must learn from the experience of missing out on a top-four spot once again next term.

“Against the top teams we are good. But against the small teams it’s like, ‘OK, the top teams would have finished these off by now’,” Dembélé, who joined Spurs from Fulham last August, told the Sun.

“We’ve dropped a lot of points against the bottom teams. We have to be aware next year.

“We haven’t had a bad season. We have the points record, that’s something positive. But at the end we are still a bit disappointed.”

Yaya Sanogo has described Arsenal as a “great club” for him and says he has rejected offers from “many teams” to sign for the Gunners.

The Auxerre forward is set to move to The Emirates this summer after Arsène Wenger confirmed that the north Londoners are in advanced talks over a deal for the 20-year-old.

“Arsenal could be a great club for me. I scored nine goals this season with Auxerre and they think I can improve my level in England,” Sanogo told Sky Sports.

“I am pleased to be following in the footsteps of Abou Diaby who came through from Auxerre. There are many teams interested in me, but Arsenal is my choice.”

Sanogo, who has scored eight goals in 12 Ligue 2 appearances this season, is out of contract in June and the Gunners have been heavily linked with a swoop for Under-21 France international.

Asked about Arsenal’s interest in Sanogo last week, Wenger said: “We are advanced with him but it is not done. I am very confident [of signing him]. He is a young, promising striker who is a big talent.”

David O’Leary has challenged Jack Wilshere to break his all-time record of the most appearances for Arsenal.

The former Republic of Ireland defender played 722 games for the north Londoners during an 18-year career with the Gunners.

O’Leary won two league titles and two FA Cups during a decorated spell at Highbury before leaving the club for Leeds United in 1993.

And although he finds it hard to envisage anyone matching his tally, he would love to see the 21-year-old Wilshere, who already has 97 Arsenal appearances under his belt, attempt to beat it.

“I’d love to be proved wrong but I just can’t see my record being beaten,” O’Leary told Arsenal’s website.

“It’s a lot of games. When you look at the numbers I think we were averaging 50 games a season. I didn’t think it was a big deal, that was what you had to do, you had to play two or three times a week.

“It’s hard to see someone going past my appearances but records are there to be broken and if it is I would be delighted if it’s someone like Jack, because then I will know that a tremendous player – who I am sure will improve and improve – played at Arsenal for a long time. And that can only benefit the club.”

Wilshere this week admitted that he is aiming to one day captain both England and Arsenal.

“I want to captain Arsenal and I want to captain England. That definitely appeals to me. It’s my ultimate dream,” he told the Sun.

Bacary Sagna’s future is yet to be decided amid reported interest from France and Russia, according to the Arsenal defender’s agent.

The France international has been linked with a return to Ligue 1, with Paris Saint-Germain believed to be keen admirers of the 30-year-old along with Anzhi Makhachkala and Monaco.

Sagna’s current Arsenal deal is set to expire at the end of next season and the former Auxerre man is yet to talk to the Gunners about a new contract.

“This is not the best time to talk about Bacary’s future,” Sagna’s agent Christophe Mongai told Izvestia.

“He’s contracted to Arsenal and the season is still not over. We’ll see what happens in the summer.”

Sagna last week admitted he was flattered to be linked with a move to Carlo Ancelotti’s side but remained tight-lipped about his Gunners future.

“Of course it makes me proud to read PSG are interested. They are a very attractive club,” Sagna told Le 10 Sport.

“Personally I’ve not been approached by PSG. I don’t know if they have contacted my agent or if these are rumours.

“At Arsenal, in the dressing room they tease me every day telling me I will leave to play at PSG, but it is speculation.

“I don’t know what is going to happen. I could very well extend my contract here in London but equally I could leave at the end of the season. I only have one year left on my contract. We will see.”
