Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios has revealed that he never thought that he’d find himself playing for Spurs, and how he managed overcome personal tragedy last season.

The 25-year-old from Honduras was speaking to Hotspur Magazine, and he revealed how when on trial at Arsenal, he would never have imagined playing for their arch-rivals.

“It’s funny how things work out,” the midfielder told Hotspur Magazine. “I would never have imagined playing for Spurs when I was on trial at Arsenal.”

“I remember being on trial at Arsenal, then Birmingham City,” he continued. “Both experiences were a bit strange at first because I was new to the country.”

The Honduran also said that he has settled in well to London life, even with his home being so far away.

“I feel very integrated in London,” he said. “I’ve moved into a lovely house and I continue to have English lessons.”

“Living in England still takes some getting used to, simply because home is so far away. If I was French or Italian, I could fly home in a day, but Honduras is a different situation entirely!”

Palacios spoke about the tragic loss of his brother Edwin, who was murdered by kidnappers in May despite his family paying a £125,000 ransom for his safe release.

“It was an incredibly difficult time,” he explained. “My family have been very supportive, as have the club. That support has allowed me to grieve and spend time with my family and friends.”

The Spurs number 12 went on to reveal that he thinks that football has been a positive distraction for him.

“Like all professional footballers, when you’re involved in a match, that’s all you can focus on. The game is so quick that you can’t afford to be distracted,” he continued.

“There’s no time to think about anything else. You can’t help but notice that the fans chant your name and in those games towards the end of last season I could hear them singing my name, so they’re very close to my heart. Their support has helped me get through this.”

Palacios also said that he loves nothing more than playing against the world’s top players, and is glad that some of them are present in his own team.

“I relish playing against the best players. Of course it helps when many of those top players are in your own team. I’m pleased I don’t have to play against Aaron Lennon anymore!”
