Button is 14 points clear in the race for the title, with his Brawn-Mercedes team-mate Rubens Barichello snapping at his heels in second place.
Former McLaren and Red Bull driver Coulthard played down Button’s chances of sealing the world title at the Brazilian Grand Prix, but believes that only car trouble would prevent him from winning the championship.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel is in third place, just two points behind Barichello, but Coulthard has called on Button to “forget about either driver” and focus on himself.
“The only thing in the back of Jenson’s mind will be the reliability of his Brawn,” said Coulthard. “It’s been good all season but reliability can always be an issue and strike when you least expect it to.”
“That said, he should win the title, though. He just needs to finish both races and realistically it’s job done.”
Coulthard also said that Button should not be criticised for simply ‘picking up the points’ required to win the title.
“All that matters to him is that he wraps up the world title, however he does that. He needs to stay cool and pick up the points and he shouldn’t be criticised for that.”
The Brazilian Grand Prix gets underway on Friday with first practice in Sao Paolo.
