Nine pubs located in various cities across the UK will broadcast this Sunday’s Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United in 3D.

The groundbreaking move has been engineered by BSkyB and marks the first ever broadcast of a live 3D TV sports event to a public audience.

The British broadcaster is set to launch Europe’s first dedicated 3D TV channel in April of this year and has set Sunday’s showdown at Emirates Stadium as the event to showcase the revolutionary technology.

The names of the nine pubs selected remain a secret, but they are located in London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin, and have been kitted out with some of the first ‘3D Ready’ TV sets to reach the UK and Ireland. Unsuspecting customers will become the first audiences anywhere in the world to experience the English Premier League live in 3D.

Following Sunday’s match, Sky plans to roll out it’s 3D channel to hundreds of pubs from April onwards, allowing football fans from across the country the opportunity to experience a live Premier League match in 3D each week.

“3D is without doubt one of the most talked-about developments in television for many years,” said Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s Chief Executive.

“Sky has always innovated to bring customers the best possible viewing experience, so we fully intend to take the lead in bringing the spectacle of 3D to the UK and Ireland.”

“Sky Sports has a proud history of innovation, from the simple clock and scoreline in the corner of the screen through to high definition,” added Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports.

“It’s fitting that we’re pioneering this new, revolutionary development in broadcasting.”
