Louk Sorensen’s sensational sequence of results has been brought to an abrupt end in Melbourne at the hands of John Isner.

The 6 ft 9″ American completed a straight sets victory over the Irishman winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Sorensen had become the first player from the Emerald Isle to reach the first round of a Grand Slam event since Matt Doyle in 1985. He had emulated Doyle’s achievements by progressing to the second round overcoming Lu-Yen Hsun.

However Isner brought the Irishman’s run to an abrupt halt.

Isner is renowned as a powerful server with ferocious ground strokes and rose to prominence with a spectacular victory over the inform Andy Roddick at the US Open last year. His armoury proved too destructive for the courageous Sorensen who battled until the final point.

Isner stormed to take the first set with little resistance from the other side of the court, but the subsequent two sets proved much cagier affairs.

The second set was decided on a tie break which Isner claimed. Unfortunately Sorensen squandered three break points for Isner to finally secure his passage into the third round.

Reflecting upon the stats, it is encouraging to see Sorensen made just 19 unforced errors compared to Isner’s 51. Yet it is evident that the superior serve of the American was the deciding factor in the tie, firing an impressive 21 aces past the Irishman.

The Stuttgart-based Sorensen, who participates in challenger events, has caused a stir in Ireland. The chief of Tennis Ireland described the achievements of the Davis Cup player as ‘life changing’.
