Manchester United could face disciplinary action after Craig Bellamy was hit by a missile during Wednesday night’s Carling Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.

The Welsh international was struck on the head by the coin thrown from the United crowd as he attempted to retrieve the ball for a corner. Furthermore, three beer bottles were thrown in his direction with some still containing liquid.

Edwin Van der Sar, the Manchester United goalkeeper, collected the empty bottles and called for the home fans to behave. Referee Howard Webb was rapidly on the scene and asked for reinforcements around the section of home fans in question.

The Football Association and the Greater Manchester Police had stressed the importance of good behaviour from both sets of fans. The Old Trafford side can now expect to incur the wrath of the FA having failed to control their fans.

The stewards at the ground did locate one of the offenders. A statement read: “Our security thinks they [the perpetrators] were identified and arrested.”

The perpetrator was held in custody over night. Meanwhile a total of 29 supporters were arrested in the build up to the match.

Manchester United have insisted that any fans guilty of causing of trouble will receive a ‘life-ban’ from the Old Trafford.
